Tahiti & Society Islands

Silicon Valley Travel books Tahiti trips through Air Tahiti Nui direct from SFO in 8 hours 15 minutes. Bora Bora is the postcard, and the Society Islands also include Moorea, Taha'a, and Huahine. Gretchen Ode has stayed at overwater bungalow properties on Bora Bora and Moorea, and books the right lagoon-view room on the right island connected by the right ferry or Air Tahiti flight.

Highlights & Adventures

What Makes Tahiti & Society Islands Worth the Flight

Bora Bora's Mount Otemanu

The extinct volcanic peak rises 2,385 feet above the lagoon and defines every iconic overwater bungalow view.

Coral gardens of Taha'a

Snorkel between two motus (small islets) in a natural drift current past clams, rays, and reef sharks.

Moorea's pineapple road

The circle-island road passes working pineapple plantations. Free samples at the farm gate.

Huahine's sacred sites

Marae Fare Miro is one of French Polynesia's most complete pre-European archaeological sites.

Ferry versus inter-island flight

Aremiti ferry connects Papeete to Moorea in 30 minutes for a fraction of the flight cost.

Sunset at InterContinental Thalasso

The Bora Bora resort's overwater bar faces Mount Otemanu at sunset. Worth a drink even if you stay elsewhere.

My Personal Take

Insider Perspective on Tahiti & Society Islands

Tahiti is best understood as an archipelago, not a single island. Papeete (on the island of Tahiti) is the arrival airport, not the destination. Most travelers connect the same day to Moorea, Bora Bora, or Taha'a via ferry or an inter-island flight on Air Tahiti.

Bora Bora deserves its reputation but is not the only overwater bungalow experience. Moorea offers similar water clarity at a lower price. Taha'a includes access to some of the best snorkeling in the Pacific. The right choice depends on your budget, honeymoon versus family, and whether you want to see one island in depth or two.

Book overwater bungalows 12 to 18 months in advance for peak season. Air Tahiti Nui operates direct flights from Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), and Seattle (SEA). SFO is the most convenient West Coast option; connections through LAX add half a day.

Honest Take: Tahiti & Society Islands Might Not Be For You If

  • You are looking for a cheap tropical vacation. Tahiti is more expensive than Hawaii, Fiji, or the Caribbean.
  • You want busy, high-energy nightlife. The Society Islands are quiet after 9 p.m. by design.
  • You need reliable cellular data and streaming. Wi-Fi at resorts is spotty; French Polynesia is intentionally low-connectivity.
  • You have short vacation time. The travel days from the mainland are long; less than 8 nights is not worth the flight investment.
Planning Tips

How to Plan a Better Tahiti & Society Islands Trip

01

Book overwater bungalows 12 to 18 months out

Peak-season bungalows on Bora Bora and Taha'a sell out more than a year in advance. Off-peak has a 6 to 9 month window.

02

Combine two islands, not three

Moorea plus Bora Bora is the classic combination. Moorea plus Taha'a for snorkeling. Three islands means a travel day between each and less time in the water.

03

Bring US dollars in small bills

Some outer motus and boat operators accept only cash. ATMs on smaller islands are unreliable. Bring at least a few hundred dollars in twenties.

04

Pack for both sun and lagoon

Lagoon water is warmer than the trade winds. You want a rash guard for snorkeling and a light layer for evening dinners.

Culture & Entry

Etiquette, Entry, and Local Norms

Cultural Etiquette

French Polynesia is French administratively and Polynesian culturally. Basic French phrases are appreciated; English is common at resorts, less so in villages. Ia Ora Na means hello in Tahitian and is used constantly. Tipping is not expected and can be refused. Do not photograph people, especially in villages, without asking. Modesty at public beaches is expected; save swimwear for resort pools and lagoons. Never touch coral or step on it while snorkeling; French Polynesian reefs are the ecosystem the entire tourism economy depends on.

Visa & Entry Requirements

US citizens need a valid passport (with at least 6 months remaining) and do not need a visa for stays under 90 days. All travelers must complete an ETIS (Electronic Travel Information System) form 72 hours before arrival at etis.pf. No vaccinations are required. French Polynesia is part of France and uses the CFP Franc, not the Euro; credit cards work in resorts but bring cash for outer islands.
