What Makes Fiji Worth the Flight

Rainbow Reef diving

Located off Taveuni, considered by many divers to be one of the top soft-coral sites in the world.

Mamanuca island hopping

Twenty small islands within a 90-minute boat ride of Nadi. Ideal for a first Fiji trip.

Yasawa outer islands

Less developed, more remote. Boat access via the Yasawa Flyer. Best for travelers wanting off-grid.

Traditional kava ceremony

The village welcome ritual involves shared kava root. Accept the cup when offered; it is a sign of respect.

Beqa Lagoon shark diving

One of the few places in the world with regular free-swim encounters with bull sharks, guided.

Coral Coast beaches

Continuous 50-mile stretch of Viti Levu (the main island). Family-friendly resorts and easy transfers.

My Personal Take

Insider Perspective on Fiji

Fiji is warmer than any comparable South Pacific destination. Water temperature stays above 78 F year-round. The people are famously welcoming, and 'Bula!' greetings are constant and genuine.

The critical decision is which archipelago. Mamanucas suit families and first-time visitors; boat transfers are 30 to 90 minutes. Yasawas suit couples wanting isolation; transfers take 2 to 4 hours. Coral Coast suits multi-generational trips and travelers who want to base at one resort and take day trips.

Fiji Airways flies direct from San Francisco (SFO) to Nadi (NAN) in 10 to 11 hours. Los Angeles (LAX) has direct service. The rest of the West Coast connects through SFO or LAX. From Nadi, most travelers connect the same day to their archipelago by boat or seaplane.

Honest Take: Fiji Might Not Be For You If

  • You want luxury on par with Bora Bora at Fiji prices. It exists (Vomo, Tokoriki) but starts at Bora Bora pricing.
  • You are traveling in cyclone season (December to March). Some resorts close; those that stay open discount heavily but weather is unreliable.
  • You want fine-dining variety. Even top resorts have limited menus; Fiji is not a foodie destination.
  • You need constant cellular service. Outer islands are still catching up on connectivity.
Planning Tips

How to Plan a Better Fiji Trip

01

Choose your archipelago before your resort

Mamanucas, Yasawas, Coral Coast, and Taveuni offer very different experiences. Resort tier is secondary to archipelago fit.

02

Book Fiji Airways direct from SFO or LAX

One-stops through Australia or New Zealand add a full day. Direct is worth the small premium.

03

Combine two islands if you have 10+ nights

One base and one outer island gives you both a home and an adventure. Under 10 nights, stay put.

04

Pack for sun, water, and coral cuts

Coral reef exposure is constant. Water shoes, rash guards, and reef-safe sunscreen are not optional.

Culture & Entry

Etiquette, Entry, and Local Norms

Cultural Etiquette

Village visits require covered shoulders and knees for both men and women. Remove sunglasses and hats when entering a village. If invited to a kava ceremony, clap once before drinking and once after. The word Bula means hello, welcome, and cheers; use it liberally. Tipping is not expected at resorts; a communal Christmas Fund is common in place of individual tips. Do not touch anyone's head; it is considered sacred in Fijian culture.

Visa & Entry Requirements

US citizens receive a free 4-month visitor permit on arrival with a valid passport (6+ months remaining). No visa is required in advance. No vaccinations are required, though hepatitis A and typhoid are commonly recommended. Fiji requires proof of onward travel on arrival. USD is not widely accepted; change to FJD at Nadi Airport or use ATMs at resorts.
