What Makes Hawaii Worth the Flight

Volcanoes National Park

Big Island's active lava flow is the only place in the US where you can watch land being made in real time.

Kauai's Napali Coast

The green cliffs on the North Shore only reveal themselves by helicopter, catamaran, or the Kalalau Trail.

Road to Hana

Maui's east-side rainforest drive covers 620 curves and 59 bridges. Best done as a full day trip, ideally in an SUV.

North Shore of Oahu

Between November and February the waves reach 30 feet. Between June and August the same beaches are calm enough to swim.

Farm-to-table Kauai

Kauai has more working farms per capita than any other Hawaiian island. Book Kilohana's plantation dinner ahead.

Sea turtle etiquette

Green sea turtles are federally protected. Stay 10 feet away in water, 15 feet on land. Guides know the best beaches.

My Personal Take

Insider Perspective on Hawaii

Hawaii breaks into four islands, each fitting a different traveler. Oahu suits first-time visitors who want Pearl Harbor, Waikiki, and city amenities. Maui suits couples who want a resort-heavy stay with day trips to Haleakala and Hana. Kauai suits nature-first travelers who do not need a mall. Big Island suits adventurers who want Kilauea in the morning and a coral reef in the afternoon.

I have been to every island multiple times, and my recommendation is almost always to pick one and go deep rather than island-hop. Inter-island flights eat a day each. If you have 10 days or more, two islands is workable. Under a week, pick one.

Direct flights from San Jose (SJC), Oakland (OAK), and San Francisco (SFO) land in Honolulu (HNL), Kahului (OGG on Maui), Kona (KOA on Big Island), and Lihue (LIH on Kauai). SJC has fewer direct options than SFO, so flight planning matters when it feels like a small choice.

Honest Take: Hawaii Might Not Be For You If

  • You want nightlife past 10 p.m. Hawaii is early to bed except in Waikiki.
  • You expect all-inclusive resorts. Only a handful exist; you will eat out and pay retail.
  • You dislike humidity. Windward sides of every island are lush because they rain a lot.
  • You are on a tight budget. Hawaii is not cheap. Flights, resorts, and rental cars all price higher than mainland equivalents.
Planning Tips

How to Plan a Better Hawaii Trip

01

Book 6 to 9 months ahead

Direct flights from SJC and top resorts on Maui and Kauai sell out early. Christmas week and spring break sell out first.

02

Pick your island before your resort

Same-price hotels feel entirely different on Oahu versus Big Island. Island selection is the single biggest factor in trip satisfaction.

03

Rent a car on Maui, Big Island, and Kauai

Public transit is limited outside Honolulu. Rideshare is expensive on outer islands. A rental is the difference between seeing the island and being trapped at the resort.

04

Haleakala sunrise on Maui, Diamond Head on Oahu, and Hanauma Bay all require timed reservations. Book them the moment your flights are confirmed.

Culture & Entry

Etiquette, Entry, and Local Norms

Cultural Etiquette

Hawaii's cultural roots are Native Hawaiian, not generic Pacific. The word aloha means hello, goodbye, and love, but locals do not say it constantly. Remove shoes before entering homes. Never stand on or move lava rocks; they are sacred. Do not touch or approach sea turtles or monk seals; both are federally protected. Learn how to pronounce place names correctly (Haleakala is HAH-lay-AH-kah-LAH). Tipping matches mainland US norms: 18 to 20% at restaurants, $1 to $2 per drink at bars.

Visa & Entry Requirements

US citizens need no passport or visa for Hawaii; a state-issued REAL ID or passport is required for domestic flights starting May 2025. International visitors need a valid passport and either an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program countries) or a B-2 tourist visa. Hawaii enforces strict agricultural rules; do not bring fresh fruit, plants, or seeds between islands or from the mainland.
